After the success of Baldur’s Gate 3, Larian Studios plans to repeat its early access strategy

Larian Studios is already working on the future of the Divinity saga, and everything indicates that the Belgian studio will once again bet on a formula that gave it exceptional results. After the global success of Baldur’s Gate 3, the team led by Swen Vincke plans to release the next Divinity under the Early Access model.
The strategy is not new for the studio. However, the impact achieved with Baldur’s Gate 3 finished consolidating this approach as one of the keys to Larian's growth within the video game industry.
The precedent of Baldur’s Gate 3
Baldur’s Gate 3 became one of the biggest commercial and critical successes of recent years. The game surpassed 20 million copies sold and was widely praised for its narrative depth and its mechanics.

A central part of that achievement was linked to Early Access. The first act of the game was available starting in August 2020 and was progressively expanded until the final release in 2023.
According to Vincke, that process made it possible to detect errors, adjust systems, and improve the overall experience before reaching the mass audience.
Early Access as a development policy
Larian Studios began using Early Access with Divinity: Original Sin and deepened this methodology with its sequel. In both cases, the studio obtained positive results in both quality and reception from players.
Early Access allows thousands of users to test the game in development. Their opinions directly influence the design, balance, and narrative.
For Larian, this bond with the community is a competitive advantage. Although it involves greater pressure and exposure, it also raises the standard of the final product.
The community as part of the creative process
Vincke explained that the earlier players get involved, the better the results are. The community not only detects technical errors, but also contributes ideas that enrich the game's design.
On several occasions, the studio corrected creative decisions based on the players' experience. That back-and-forth became a trademark of the studio.
Larian acknowledges that Early Access is demanding for the team, but considers that the benefit far outweighs the additional effort.

Artificial intelligence and new tools
The next Divinity will also incorporate the use of generative artificial intelligence as support for development. According to Vincke, this technology will make it possible to optimize repetitive tasks and free up time to focus on creative aspects.
The studio keeps that AI will be a complementary tool and not a replacement for human work. The goal is to improve efficiency without losing artistic identity.
Internal debate and industry challenges
The incorporation of artificial intelligence was not free of controversy. A former Larian employee expressed reservations about its implementation and raised concerns related to the recognition of human work.
This debate reflects a broader discussion within the video game industry. The challenge lies in balancing technological innovation, creativity, and appreciation of talent.
Meanwhile, Larian Studios is moving forward with a clear strategy. Repeat the model that worked and once again bet on an active community as the engine of development.
