The Brazilian president demands an investigation "without shields," but his previous connection with banker Daniel Vorcaro opens a political front: his opponents could demand explanations about what the government knew and what it did with that information

The Master Bank scandal began to become a political problem for Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. The Brazilian president publicly demanded that the investigation proceed “without shielding anyone” and that all those involved be investigated, “no matter who it hurts.”

His concern is not limited to the crisis facing the Supreme Federal Court: the case also threatens to raise questions about the link between the Government and Daniel Vorcaro, the banker detained for the massive fraud attributed to the institution.

The most uncomfortable point for Lula is that the president himself acknowledged having met with Vorcaro at the Palácio do Planalto in December 2024. He later explained that the meeting took place at the request of then-minister Guido Mantega and during the meeting he allegedly conveyed to the banker that the investigations against the bank would be conducted in a technical manner.

The emergence of new messages and links between Vorcaro and members of Brazilian institutions once again places that meeting under scrutiny. The president faces an inevitable political question: what information did he receive during his contacts with the businessman and whether the Government acted appropriately in response to signs of irregularities.

If future investigations demonstrate that Executive officials were aware of irregularities and did not act, they could attempt to attribute to him political responsibility for omission, concealment, or interference. However, to transform those suspicions into criminal responsibility, it would be necessary to demonstrate a concrete conduct by Lula and the existence of evidence that supports his involvement.

The situation becomes even more delicate because the scandal has reached the Supreme Court. Alexandre de Moraes is under scrutiny for his ties to Vorcaro, while André Mendonça has pushed for measures to clarify the relationships between the banker and the magistrate. The crisis has caused a confrontation within the Court itself and has called into question the credibility of the institution.

Lula's concern, therefore, arises from the political risk that new revelations will establish deeper connections between the banker, public officials, and the Brazilian power structure. In the midst of an electoral campaign, any evidence that the Government was aware of irregularities and did not act could become a blow of enormous magnitude for the president.
