His post came after a match that ended with Rosario Central as champions, although a good part of the attention quickly shifted to the decisions made by the referee and the atmosphere that was generated during the final minutes.
A final marked by controversy
The match, held at the Estadio Único Madre de Ciudades in Santiago del Estero, began with Estudiantes taking the lead just a minute into the game thanks to a goal from Alexis Castro. However, the Rosario team reacted and managed to turn the score around with two interventions from Ángel Di María: first with a free kick and then from the penalty spot.
That second goal was precisely one of the most debated moments of the final. Herrera went to VAR to review a foul by Leandro González Pírez on Enzo Copetti and, after observing the action, decided to award a penalty in favor of Central.
The decision generated protests from Estudiantes' players and officials. In the final stretch, Julián Fernández scored the definitive 3-1 and the tension exploded with a series of confrontations among the players on the field.
The strong confrontation between Verón and Herrera
Juan Sebastián Verón, president of Pincha, also expressed his anger during and after the match. After Central's third goal, the official entered the field, approached Herrera, and confronted him face to face. The cameras captured the moment he shouted: "This is your fault. You are a thief!". Later, in a conversation with ESPN, Verón responded with irony when asked about what happened and stated: "I congratulated him because he officiated very well. Nothing to say. I think I said that, but honestly, I don't remember".
The official also analyzed the development of the final and, without taking away credit from the champion, maintained that there were other factors that ultimately influenced the outcome. Verón explained: "We need to see who led to the final being this way. Without taking away credit from Central, which is a very good team, there was something else in the middle that ended up bringing the match to this place".
Additionally, he referred to the difficulty the Platense squad faced during the match and pointed out: "I congratulated the guys. It's hard to play in this context because you are conditioned. Instead of thinking about playing, you are thinking about something else".
Now, the refereeing report will be analyzed by the AFA Disciplinary Tribunal, which could determine a sanction for Verón due to the incidents that occurred at the end of the match.
