Meanwhile, while CONMEBOL investigates, Alianza Lima demands the disqualification of U de Chile.
The president of the Peruvian club, Jorge Zúñiga, warned that awarding the points to the Chilean team would set a 'terrible precedent'
The 2025 Copa Sudamericana has been embroiled in scandal after the violent night in Avellaneda during the match between Independiente and Universidad de Chile. While CONMEBOL is initiating disciplinary proceedings and the club managements are preparing their defenses, a third party is waiting expectantly: Alianza Lima, which was supposed to face the winner in the quarterfinals.
The Alianza president, Jorge Zúñiga, broke his silence and demanded clarity regarding the outcome of the series. "The outlook is complex, because first of all, a proceeding is initiated where CONMEBOL will conduct its investigation and then gives both clubs five days to present their defenses, and then issues a ruling," he explained in statements to Willax TV.

Additionally, Zúñiga pointed directly at Universidad de Chile: "The team that was in a position to advance, which is Universidad de Chile, is being accused as the initiator of these unfortunate events, and the reaction of the Argentine fans ended in this tragedy."
The executive also warned that a possible ruling in favor of the Chilean team would set a serious precedent for the future of the tournament: "If the points are awarded to Universidad de Chile, it would set a terrible precedent, because it would mean that tomorrow I could win at home and then cause acts of violence in the second leg in order to advance."

Meanwhile, CONMEBOL's disciplinary proceedings point to responsibilities for both clubs. In its preliminary report, employees of the governing body mention violence from the warm-up by Universidad de Chile, but also highlight the inaction of the Buenos Aires Police despite repeated requests for intervention.
On the other hand, Independiente also came under scrutiny, since it had reportedly been warned in the security meeting not to open the South Lower stand. The club replied that it had already been sold and promised to reinforce with private security, something that was not fulfilled and may have facilitated the incidents.
The decision in the case will be known in the coming days. However, for now, it seems unlikely that either team will be able to avoid severe sanctions and continue in the tournament.
