The Nancy Grace Roman telescope from NASA is scheduled to launch this Sunday, August 30, from Florida to study exoplanets, distant galaxies, and dark matter.

The launch is scheduled from the Kennedy Space Center. However, the first images are not expected to arrive until 2027.

When will the Nancy Grace Roman telescope launch?

The Nancy Grace Roman telescope will be launched aboard a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket from NASA's Launch Complex 39A.

The window is set for 7:26 a.m. EDT on Sunday, August 30. A few hours later, the telescope will be released from the rocket's second stage.

The National Weather Service forecast indicated a 50% chance of thunderstorms for Sunday at the Kennedy Space Center. If the weather forces a delay, there is a second window on Monday, August 31, at 7:22 a.m. EDT.

What will the Nancy Grace Roman telescope be used for?

The Nancy Grace Roman telescope is NASA's new flagship observatory and will work alongside the James Webb and Hubble, rather than replacing them.

Its mission will allow the study of exoplanets, distant galaxies, the Milky Way, dark matter, and dark energy. The initial mission will last five years, although specialists expect it to operate for at least twice that long.

The observatory measures approximately 12.7 meters tall and 4.4 meters wide, and weighs about 8,000 kilograms.

What technology will the new NASA observatory have?

Roman will feature a 288-megapixel camera and a 2.4-meter mirror. Its field of view will be 100,000 times greater than that of the Hubble and will observe the universe in infrared light.

It will also have a coronagraph capable of blocking the light from distant stars. This will allow for direct imaging of exoplanets orbiting those stars.

Researchers estimate that the mission could help discover up to 100,000 exoplanets. Additionally, it will conduct surveys to map the Milky Way and study extremely distant galaxies.

When will the first photos from the Roman telescope be known?

After the launch, Roman will need to travel to the Sun-Earth L2 point, located about 1.6 million kilometers from Earth. The journey could take several weeks.

Once there, a commissioning period of approximately 90 days will begin. During this phase, the instruments will be activated and diagnostic tests will be conducted.

NASA tentatively expects the telescope to start photographing stars in early 2027. However, there is a smaller chance that the first images will arrive before the end of 2026.

NASA reported that the survey data will be public once processed, with no exclusive access periods. The telescope will send approximately 1.4 terabytes of data per day to ground stations.
