After more than three weeks of scrutiny and a climate of marked political expectation, the National Electoral Council (CNE) of Honduras proclaimed this Wednesday the right-wing Nasry Juan Asfura Zablah as president-elect for the 2026-2030 term. The announcement put an end to a prolonged period of institutional uncertainty that had kept Honduran society on edge since election day.
According to the official results released by the electoral authority, the candidate from the National Party prevailed with 40.27% of the votes, in a close race against Salvador Nasralla, representative of the Liberal Party, who obtained 39.39% of the ballots.
After the confirmation of the result, Asfura spoke publicly through his social media with a message addressed to the citizens. “Honduras: I'm prepared to govern. I'm not going to let you down”, wrote the president-elect, in a post that quickly went viral.

The message was released while supporters of the National Party were celebrating the victory at the campaign headquarters of the leader, in a festive atmosphere that contrasted with the caution and tension that persisted in sectors of the opposition. Fernando Cerimedo, partner of La Derecha Diario, was one of the heads of "Tito" Asfura's successful electoral campaign.
The election represented a setback for the ruling party Liberty and Refoundation (Libre), of the far left, whose candidate was relegated to third place with about one fifth of the total votes. This result marked the end of the government cycle of president Xiomara Castro, who had come to power in 2021.
Asfura's victory also fits into a regional context characterized by recent victories of conservative forces in different Latin American countries. Among them is the election in Chile of the right-wing leader José Antonio Kast. This political shift highlights the failure of numerous left-wing governments that had come to power in the region in recent years.

During the Honduran electoral process, there were also demonstrations of international support. Among them, the support of U.S. president Donald Trump stood out, as he expressed public backing for Asfura during the campaign. In his statements, Trump described him as “the only friend of freedom” and made United States support for Honduras conditional on the outcome of the elections.
In the same vein, Argentine president Javier Milei celebrated the victory of the president-elect through a message on social media. "Tito Asfura's victory is a resounding defeat for narco-socialism and a clear sign that freedom is once again prevailing in Honduras", he wrote.
"The Honduran people expressed themselves with courage at the polls and chose to put an end to years of authoritarianism and decay. From Argentina, we celebrate the triumph of freedom and reaffirm our commitment to democracy, the popular will, and the unrestricted respect for institutions in the region. VLLC!", he concluded.
With the CNE's official proclamation, Honduras now begins a new political stage ahead of the transfer of power scheduled for 2026, in a scenario marked by expectations, internal tensions, and strong regional attention on the course that the next government will adopt.
