The company obtained a ruling in its favor due to the defendant's absence, a moderator of a Reddit community linked to piracy

Nintendo of America won a legal victory that awarded it $4.5 million in damages from a lawsuit filed against an individual accused of selling pirated versions of games for the Switch console. The ruling came by default, as the defendant did not respond to the legal action initiated in 2024.

The target of the lawsuit was James Williams, known online by the pseudonym Archbox. According to the company, this man was allegedly the operator, supervisor, and driving force behind several sites that offered extensive libraries of Switch games illegally for download.

Williams also served as a moderator for the Reddit community r/SwitchPirates, a space dedicated to discussing console piracy. Although that subreddit remains active, specialized sources noted that he is currently not listed among the moderators.

Nintendo, which typically deploys its legal team aggressively in such cases, had relatively less work this time. The absence of a response from the defendant allowed the court to rule in favor of the company without the need for a lengthy trial.

The order to disable the sites

In addition to the monetary compensation, the ruling includes a clear order: Williams must immediately disable access to all online stores he operates or controls that offered the public extensive catalogs of pirated Nintendo Switch games.

The company argued in its lawsuit that the defendant was behind several of these platforms, which it referred to as “Pirate Shops.” The court decision aims to cut off the illegal distribution of titles protected by copyright from the Japanese firm.

This type of action is part of a broader strategy by Nintendo to combat piracy in its console ecosystem. The brand has repeatedly shown that it does not hesitate to resort to the courts when it detects operations that affect its commercial interests.

In this particular case, the defendant's failure to appear simplified the process. Without an active defense, the court accepted Nintendo's claims and set the amount of $4.5 million as compensation for the alleged damages.

Context of the community and the ruling

The Reddit community mentioned in the lawsuit continues to operate, although Williams' presence as a moderator is no longer verified in public listings. This does not change the responsibility attributed to him by the company in its original court filing.

The outcome makes it clear that even when the defendant does not appear, the consequences can be significant. The order to disable the sites aims to limit access to illegal material and send a message to those involved in similar activities.

Nintendo insisted that Williams was the central figure behind these operations. The default judgment reinforces that position and requires the defendant to comply with the measures ordered by the court immediately.

With this ruling, the company adds a new precedent in its fight against unauthorized software distribution. The combination of a multimillion-dollar compensation and the obligation to close the download channels represents a decisive outcome for the company, largely achieved due to the defendant's inaction.
