Unborn Child Day: Menem's decree that made this date official in Argentina

March 25 is a day dedicated to reflection and the recognition of the right to life from conception

Since ancient times, life has been considered a sacred value and worthy of protection. Throughout history, different civilizations have promoted principles that emphasize the importance of existence from its earliest stages.

Over time, many nations established dates with the purpose of strengthening this perspective and raising awareness about the importance of preserving the dignity of every human being.

In this context, various countries decided to establish a special day dedicated to reflection and recognition of the right to life from conception. This commemoration is known as the Day of the Unborn Child.

The origin of this day lies in both governmental and religious initiatives, which seek to raise awareness in society about the value of prenatal life.

In Argentina

In 1999, Argentina was one of the first nations to officially establish March 25 as the Day of the Unborn Child, during the presidency of Carlos Menem.

After a meeting with Pope John Paul II at the Vatican, former President Menem issued a decree establishing that date as the Day of the Unborn Child.

During the first commemoration of this date, in 1999, the then-president stated that "Argentina has placed among the priorities of its foreign policy, a firm and determined action in defense of life.

In that context, he added: "My government considers that the safeguarding of such principles is essential for the good of humanity in general and the Argentine nation in particular. Therefore, it must be considered a State policy."

The proposal was quickly adopted by other nations in Latin America, such as Chile, Guatemala, and Peru, which incorporated the date into their official calendars by recognizing its significance.

The choice of March 25 is not random; it coincides with the Christian feast of the Annunciation, which commemorates the conception of Jesus, thus reinforcing the link between the date and the defense of life from its beginning.

The purpose of this date

The main purpose of the Day of the Unborn Child is to promote a culture of respect and care for human life in all its stages, with special emphasis on the gestation period.

Its goal is to raise awareness about the rights of the unborn and encourage the implementation of policies and measures that ensure their protection and development.

Additionally, this day provides a space for education on the importance of motherhood, offering support to pregnant women, recognizing the challenges they may face, and providing resources to help them overcome them.
