Through a video, Stéfano Di Carlo, president of the Núñez club, confirmed the start of the new megaproject that will include a fifth tier and a roof
What had been an imminent announcement was finally confirmed:River will once again increase the Monumental's capacity and will add a roof. Through a video published on the club's official social media,Stéfano Di Carlo, president of Millonario, made the project official, which will require an investment of more than 100 million dollars and will be financed entirely by private companies.
In his presentation, the executive described the day as "a historic day" and linked the project with the founding vision of Antonio Vespucio Liberti, the driving force behind the original construction of the stadium more than 85 years ago, and the modernization process carried out by his predecessors Rodolfo D’Onofrio and Jorge Brito.
One of the central pillars of the project will be the construction of a perimeter structure of columns that will surround the entire stadium. This will make it possible to raise a 360-degree stand and add 16,000 seats in a new fifth tier, which will be intended mainly for members, increasing the total capacity to 101,000 seats. The new seats will be red and white, forming a wrapping flag around the stadium.
In addition, that same structure will be responsible for supporting the almost total roofing of the Monumental, which will extend practically to the edge of the playing field, which will remain uncovered in order to receive natural light. The objective is to cover the vast majority of spectators, improve the acoustics, and provide greater comfort on rainy days or in high temperatures.
The structural design will be handled by a German company specialized in iconic stadiums worldwide and the financing will be provided by international banks through credit with competitive rates that the club will be able to repay with the current revenues that the project will generate. The leadership emphasized that this is a collective effort, which was made possible thanks to the great institutional and economic strength of the club, without compromising its day-to-day operations.
El Monumental volverá a expandirse
Regarding the timeline, the start of construction is scheduled for April of this year and it is estimated that it will have an approximate duration of three years. During that period, the stadium will continue to be used through phased planning in order to minimize the sporting and logistical impact.
With this new expansion and the roofing, the Monumental will establish itself as one of the largest and most modern stadiums on the planet, prepared not only for soccer but also for major international events.
