San Lorenzo decided to return to a name that left a deep mark in the club's recent years. After the departure of Néstor Gorosito, the institution officialized the return of Rubén Darío Insúa, who will take over again as coach and will start his third term at the helm of the team.
The presentation had a strong emotional component and was led by Gallego himself, whose voice accompanied a video published by the Ciclón on its social media. "When I was little, I heard my dad say that San Lorenzo must be defended every day and that it must be taken care of. I intend to honor my father's memory", the coach expressed in the recording.
The club accompanied the announcement with a message that summarized the spirit of his return: "What you planted in San Lorenzo we remember every day. But this story is not over yet. We will seek what is missing".
The presentation also appealed to one of the symbols that accompanied Gallego's previous term. The phrase he had pronounced in 2023, when he stated that San Lorenzo had to "be defended every day and in all areas", was reclaimed by the club as an emblem of his return.
The Ciclón even went further and later published another video in which it drew a parallel between Insúa and Rocky Balboa, using a scene from the third film of the saga starring Sylvester Stallone.
For this new stage, Insúa will be accompanied by Fabián García, Carlos Orsi, and Roberto Oste as field assistants, while Guillermo Cinquetti will be the physical trainer. The coach signed a contract for 12 months and will immediately start working with the squad.
Insúa's return comes almost two and a half years after his departure, which occurred in April 2024 during the management of Marcelo Moretti. His second term had been one of the most notable in recent times: he recovered the competitiveness of the team, managed to qualify it again for international competitions, and revalued a good part of the squad.
For his third term, the goal will be to place the blue and maroon team back in the playoff qualification spots and maintain the chances of advancing to the next stage of the tournament. Additionally, the team still has the opportunity to secure a spot for the next edition of the Copa Sudamericana, one of the main goals for the end of the semester.
Now he will face an immediate challenge. His debut will be on Sunday, September 13, when San Lorenzo visits Independiente at the Estadio Libertadores de América for the ninth round of the Torneo Clausura.
Insúa's numbers at San Lorenzo
The 65-year-old coach from Buenos Aires has led the Ciclón on two occasions. In his first term, between 2002 and 2003, he managed 47 matches, with a record of 20 wins, 12 draws, and 15 losses, and a balance of 71 goals for and 55 against. During that period, he won one title: Copa Sudamericana 2002 (the first edition of the tournament).
