OpenAI has started to regain market share among corporate clients in the United States, according to new data from Ramp.

Anthropic still maintains the lead, but OpenAI is growing faster during the third quarter among the surveyed companies.

OpenAI narrows the gap with Anthropic among companies

The data from Ramp, a corporate card and expense management company, shows a shift in the business competition between OpenAI and Anthropic.

OpenAI had lost its leadership among business clients paying through Ramp in May. At that time, Anthropic reached 41% market share, compared to 39% for OpenAI.

The company behind ChatGPT has not surpassed its competitor since then. However, the most recent data shows that the gap has started to narrow.

In July, Anthropic accounted for nearly 44% of the market among Ramp clients, while OpenAI reached almost 40%.

What Ramp's data shows about OpenAI and Anthropic

The survey includes over 70,000 U.S. companies that use Ramp's payment and corporate card services.

The companies belong to various industries, although Ramp's client base has a significant presence from the technology sector.

According to Ramp economist Ara Kharazian, the latest data shows that OpenAI is growing faster than Anthropic within this segment during the third quarter.

The period has not yet ended, so the trend could change before the quarter closes. Additionally, Ramp did not disclose the specific amounts spent by the companies and only released percentages.

Why OpenAI has not yet regained corporate leadership

The data from Ramp does not represent the entirety of the corporate artificial intelligence market. The survey excludes large companies that use expense management tools from providers like American Express.

Even so, the numbers show that Anthropic has not consolidated a definitive advantage. Companies can switch providers as each company presents new models.

This dynamic also raises questions about how stable corporate spending on artificial intelligence tools is.

What Ramp's economist said about the new models

Kharazian attributed part of OpenAI's growth to the performance of its new model. “GPT-5.6 Sol is really good, increasingly the choice of developers,” he posted on X.

Regarding Anthropic's higher-level model, he added: “Fable 5, meanwhile, disappointed both in adoption and real-world applications due to the price + the data retention requirements imposed by regulators.”

The analysis acknowledges that this explanation may be an oversimplification. Fable is more expensive, but it is also aimed at a more specific set of uses than a general chatbot.

Additionally, Anthropic had reported that it needed to retain user data from Fable for 30 days.
