Overwatch 2: its director states that it doesn't respond to the competition from Marvel Rivals

Blizzard also revealed that one of the main pillars to strengthen the game's proposal will be the narrative

In an increasingly competitive landscape within the team-based shooter genre, Overwatch 2 continues its evolution with new features and collaborations. Despite the recent emergence of Marvel Rivals, a title that many consider a direct competitor, Blizzard Entertainment states that the game's plans haven't been affected by external factors.

In recent statements, Aaron Keller, director of Overwatch 2, stated that the content released in recent months—such as the Stadium mode, map voting, and other features—had already been in development long before the announcement of Marvel Rivals. He emphasized that the vision is long-term and follows a structured plan.

Focus on narrative and expansion of collaborations

Keller also revealed that one of the pillars to strengthen the game's offering will be the narrative, an aspect that he acknowledged has been neglected compared to other gameplay elements. As new characters, maps, and modes are added, the team's intention is to recover the storytelling that once helped consolidate the Overwatch universe.

This is complemented by collaborations with iconic franchises such as G.I. Joe, Transformers, Street Fighter, and Avatar: The Last Airbender, which aim to broaden the game's appeal through visually distinctive and nostalgic content.

Since its launch, Overwatch 2 has faced criticism for structural changes, monetization, and design decisions. However, Blizzard appears to be listening to feedback from its most loyal player base. The new features aim to revitalize the multiplayer experience without losing the essence that made the title a benchmark in the genre.

The challenge is now twofold: to preserve the game's original identity while remaining competitive against new proposals gaining ground in the market. According to Keller, staying true to the roadmap is the key for Overwatch 2 to continue growing in an industry that never stops evolving.
