While some media outlets talk about mass resignations, the records show that the teaching staff has grown.

The Undersecretary of University Policies, Alejandro Álvarez, once again countered a media operation against the Government of Javier Milei with data. This time, the official disputed a publication from El Economista, which had claimed that “more than 10,000 teachers” resigned from their positions in national universities since the President took office.
Álvarez responded directly and pointed out that the total number of teachers did not decrease, but rather increased. He specified that in 2023 there were 147,821 teachers in national universities, while by the end of 2025 the total rose to 152,545. In other words, far from a supposed “mass resignation,” the teaching staff grew.
“The ‘Economist’ that doesn’t know how to add,” the official quipped on X, where he emphasized that the data completely contradicts the narrative established by opposition sectors and critical media of the Government. The response once again exposed a common practice: presenting isolated or outright erroneous figures to support a narrative of “destruction” of public university.
The clarification comes amid the discussion on university funding, where the Government has been demanding audits, transparency, and accountability in the use of public resources. In recent days, Álvarez had also targeted the National University of the Arts, which he described as “the worst managed in the entire country” after revealing that its cost per graduate in 2024 reached $423,830,487, compared to a national average of $52,368,000.
The precedent of Exactas: more positions and better salaries
At the end of April, the official had already presented a similar case at the Faculty of Exact Sciences of UBA, where the authorities were reporting a supposed exodus of teachers while official data showed the opposite.
According to information released by the Undersecretary of University Policies, the teaching positions in Exactas increased from 1,968 in May 2023 to 2,095 in February 2026. In other words, far from a reduction, there were more than 120 additional positions.
The teaching staff increased at Exactas UBA.
This data contradicted the narrative established by university sectors linked to the protest, which had falsely reported the departure of 438 teachers and researchers since Milei took office. However, when looking at the total staff, the teaching structure did not decrease: it grew.
