Repudiable: Foreign students mocked Argentina after the World Cup final

In the wake of the defeat of the Argentine National Team against Spain in the 2026 World Cup final, a strong controversy erupted on social media after videos and posts went viral showing foreign students studying at public universities in the country celebrating the result and mocking the country.

In response to this episode, which involved foreign students residing in Argentina, many of whom are enrolled in institutions like the University of Buenos Aires (UBA), thousands of users expressed their outrage and launched a campaign to sanction them or achieve their expulsion from the country.

Although the posts had been circulating since previous matches, the vast majority began to spread after Spain's 1-0 victory in extra time.

Mockery Against Argentina and the Malvinas

In this context, groups of students shared stories and tweets in which they celebrated the fall of the Argentine team. However, the controversy escalated quickly when some of that content exceeded the usual football banter.

The point of greatest controversy occurred when several of the posts included explicit mockery related to the Malvinas Cause, the memory of the fallen, and other national symbols.

On social media, the anger was not only directed at the content of the posts but also at the context in which they occurred. While foreign students have free access to public university education, funded by Argentine taxpayers, they then mock the country and its history.

Thousands of users expressed their discomfort, emphasizing that those who receive these benefits then openly disrespect the country.

In this context, even the government of Javier Milei was urged to take action. Among the most repeated requests was the need to review the criteria for temporary residency, evaluate academic sanctions, and even consider the expulsion of those involved or the removal of the benefit of free university education for foreign students who engage in such conduct.

However, it should be noted that the libertarian administration had already implemented a reform to allow such actions, although university authorities are the only ones authorized to take these measures.

In parallel to the digital repercussions, formal actions were also recorded within the academic sphere. Argentine students sent emails to the authorities of various faculties presenting complaints and requesting institutional intervention.

In those communications, screenshots of the posts were attached with identification of those involved, and the opening of administrative inquiries was requested.

Additionally, disciplinary sanctions were demanded, as the actions constitute a violation of student coexistence codes and a lack of respect towards the community and national symbols.

The case continues to generate repercussions in a context where access to public education by foreign students is becoming increasingly debated.
