With this move, the Russian leader seeks to strengthen his negotiating position with the Trump administration
In recent days, Russia has intensified its offensive in Ukraine, seeking to gain the largest possible amount of territory before the summit scheduled for this Friday, August 15 in Alaska. At that meeting, the presidents of the United States, Donald Trump, and Russia, Vladimir Putin, will discuss a possible agreement to end the conflict.
According to reports from analysts and Ukrainian sources, Russian forces are exerting strong pressure on the front and have managed to advance northeast of Pokrovsk, in the Donetsk region, a key point known as "the fortress belt," which has been an essential part of Ukrainian defense since 2014.
If Moscow manages to consolidate its positions and deploy more troops in the area, it could isolate Kramatorsk, one of the last major strongholds of Donbas under Kyiv's control. The fall of that city would give Putin almost total control over the region, strengthening his negotiating position with the Trump administration.

The monitoring platform DeepState reported that Russian troops advanced at least ten kilometers (6.2 miles) northward toward Dobropillia, a city that before the war had 60,000 inhabitants, and are threatening to break new lines of defense in the area.
The Ukrainian military command downplayed this movement, stating that it is a small infiltrated Russian group that doesn't yet control the area. However, the "Dnipro" force group confirmed fighting near Kucheriv Yar, in line with some of DeepState's reports.

Despite these advances, various military analysts point out that Ukrainian defenses are holding and limiting Russian progress on much of the front, so they believe it is possible that Ukraine will manage to stop this threat in the coming days or weeks, as has already happened in similar offensives.
The possible renunciation by Russia of the territories it occupies in Ukraine will be one of the central points of the negotiations. Moscow is not willing to return any area, while Kyiv rejects giving up the provinces it lost due to the Russian invasion.
