Brazilian football was at the center of a significant police operation this Monday, after authorities deployed a series of raids in different states of the country to investigate an alleged organization linked to drug and arms trafficking. Among the targets was David Corrêa da Fonseca, a forward for Vasco da Gama.
According to O Globo, the footballer, known as DVD, was one of the main targets of the security forces. Agents raided his residence in Rio de Janeiro, where they seized cell phones and documents that could provide elements for the investigation.
The operation also directly affected Vasco. The Civil Police conducted a search at the training center of the carioca club, although so far the institution has not issued any statement regarding the procedure or the alleged involvement of its player in the case.
The investigation, dubbed 'A Tropa', is being carried out jointly by the Civil Police of different Brazilian states. In total, authorities executed four temporary arrest warrants and 15 searchesinEspírito Santo, Goiás, the Federal District, and Rio de Janeiro.
In addition to Corrêa, another footballer was involved in the procedures. Renyer Oliveira, who came up through the youth ranks of Santos and is currently a player for Azuriz de Paraná, was arrested for contempt during the proceedings, according to the G1 portal.
Renyer Oliveira was also targeted in the operation by the Civil Police of Espírito Santo
According to the Civil Police of Rio de Janeiro, the case points to a group that would be involved in drug and arms trafficking and that would maintain "links with a criminal faction". Authorities also indicated that the alleged organization would have ramifications in different states across Brazilian territory.
For now, the investigation continues and it has not been officially reported what the degree of involvement of the mentioned footballers would be. In the case of Vasco, the institution's silence remains as the team prepares for an important international commitment: next week they will face Independiente Santa Fe in the quarter-finals of the Copa Sudamericana.
