A tragedy struck the city of Graz, in southeastern Austria, when a shooting at a high school left at least eleven people dead and about thirty injured.
The attack occurred at 8 a.m. local time, at a federal upper secondary school located on Dreierschützengasse street, a short distance from the central train station. Austrian police confirmed that the shooting took place inside the school building.
According to Graz's mayor, Elke Kahr, among the fatalities were seven students, one teacher, and the alleged perpetrator. Authorities were still investigating the motivations behind the attack.
A morning that ended in horror
The scene was described as chaotic by the first officers who arrived at the site. A police source told the APA agency that it could have been an indiscriminate shooting, although at the moment no hypothesis was ruled out.
The attack also caused at least 28 injuries, four of whom remained in critical condition. Some of them were shot in the head, according to the local newspaper Kronen Zeitung.
The injured were immediately taken to nearby hospitals, where medical teams worked intensively to stabilize them.
Ongoing investigation and national shock
Authorities deployed a large police operation in the area and cordoned off the building while the initial investigations were carried out. At the moment, it was unknown whether the striker acted alone or with accomplices.
The incident caused deep shock throughout the country. The educational community, families, and the general public reacted with pain and disbelief at what had happened.
Austria, which doesn't usually experience this type of violent event in its educational system, experienced one of the most tragic days in recent times.
