The conditions linked to the climatic pattern known as El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) could persist throughout the remainder of 2026 and extend into the early months of 2027.
According to available information, there is almost a 100% probability that this scenario will continue, with rainfall above usual levels in southern Brazil, Paraguay, and northeastern Argentina.
This situation will have a significant impact on the Paraná River basin, whose flows feed the Yacyretá Hydroelectric Power Station. The phenomenon, referred to by specialists as "Super Niño", is not limited to a specific episode of precipitation but presents a hydrological scenario that must be monitored continuously.

The Paraná could double its flow
One of the main expected effects is related to the behavior of the Paraná. During episodes of this nature, the inflow can double its historical average, generating a volume of water considerably higher than usual.
In this scenario, the Hydrology Sector of the Technical Department of the Binational Yacyretá Entity (EBY) maintains constant monitoring of precipitation and the flows of the various rivers that make up the basin.
If conditions require it, the Binational Yacyretá Entity will use its discharge structures to evacuate the excess water that cannot be processed by the turbines. The measure aims to control the flow and reduce flood peaks, with the goal of minimizing risks for populations located downstream.
