The Minister of the Mainland Affairs Council (MAC), Chiu Chui-cheng, warned that a potential invasion by China into Taiwan would trigger a "domino effect" in Asia with serious consequences for United States security and the region's geopolitical balance. The statement was made during an official visit to Washington, where he participated in a meeting at the Heritage Foundation.
According to the official, the strategic position of Taiwan in the "first island chain" makes it a central piece in the confrontation between democratic and authoritarian systems.
Taiwan's strategic role
Chiu emphasized that the island went from being the first line of defense against communist expansion to becoming the main front of dispute between China and Western democracies. He also warned that Beijing is intensifying its military preparations with the goal of forcing unification and displacing United States influence in the Indo-Pacific.

The minister stated that a forced annexation would undermine the regional order and would directly threaten the security and prosperity of the United States.
Economy and technological security
The head of the MAC recalled that Taiwan is the world's leading producer of advanced semiconductors which are essential for the global technology industry. He pointed out that any disruption in that role would mean a huge loss for the international community, particularly for the United States and its technology sector.
