After announcing his retirement with a handwritten letter, internet users noticed a particular detail about the pen the captain used and the meaning it holds for fans of the saga
Some interpreted the curves of the detail as the logo of the Qatar 2022 World Cup, but for the “potterheads” there was no doubt: it was a clear reference to the saga The Time-Turner is the artifact that in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban allows Hermione Granger to attend two classes at the same time. It is a golden hourglass inside rotating metal rings that, as its name suggests, allows one to go back in time.
After two decades defending the albiceleste jersey, Lionel Messi announced his retirement from international football The captain chose a handwritten letter to say goodbye and convey what he felt at that moment. The post had an immediate impact, but a detail in the image ended up capturing almost all the attention on social media.
Messi, 39, had led the National Team to its second consecutive World Cup final in July In his message, he explained that the decision hurt him and still hurts, although he understands that it is the right time. “It was a decision that hurt me and still hurts me deeply, but I understand that it is the right time,” he wrote on Instagram. He added: “I swear I always gave my all, not just in the last few years when we won everything, but also before, and I always fought and gave everything for this jersey.”
The forward leaves behind a legacy that is hard to match. He is the player with the most matches in the history of Argentina, with 207, the top scorer with 125 goals, the one with the most assists, and the one who played the most matches in World Cups. In his statement, he also made it clear that he feels it is time to make way for a new generation.
“I love, loved, and will always love being in the national team,” he stated. “I gave everything I had, I have nothing more to give, and besides, there are some very talented young players coming up behind me who deserve to be there.” The message closed a cycle that began when he was a kid and that he maintained even when he could have opted for another jersey.
Beyond the announcement itself, what truly caused a stir was a detail of the pen with which Messi wrote the letter Users, especially fans of the Harry Potter universe, noticed that at the tip of the pen appeared an object resembling a Time-Turner and the inscription “Department of Mysteries.”
The family's connection to that story is not coincidental. Antonela Roccuzzo is a well-known fan of the world created by J.K. Rowling and has spoken on more than one occasion about her passion for the saga. That detail completed the interpretation made by thousands of users when they saw the image of the letter.
The reaction on X was immediate. The detail went from being a curiosity to becoming a trend and generated hundreds of comments that mixed humor, nostalgia, and recognition of the gesture. For many, the pen was not just an object, but a personal sign that connected the most emotional moment of Messi's career with a universe that is part of his family's daily life.
Messi's retirement from the National Team closes a period marked by achievements that seemed distant With the albiceleste, he lifted the 2022 World Cup, the Copa América in 2021 and 2024, the Olympic gold in Beijing 2008, and the Finalissima in 2022. The final in Qatar, with two of his goals against France, is etched as one of the most memorable matches of his career.
He also left performances that are still repeated on social media: the hat-tricks against Brazil in 2012 and against Ecuador in the qualifiers for Russia 2018, or those moments in matches where he would walk across the grass and suddenly resolve everything with a touch.
