A recent survey of 1,182 people conducted in August by AP-NORC shows that more than half of Americans approve of the policy President Donald Trump is using to combat crime.
53% of voters approve of Trump's strategy to combat crime, including the deployment of the National Guard in the U.S. capital ordered by the president two weeks ago. Of that 53% of voters, 46% identify as politically independent and 16% as Democrats.
55% of respondents said they consider it acceptable for the U.S. military and the National Guard to assist police in major cities. However, federalization of police in these cities—that is, the federal government taking control of police stations—is only supported by one third of voters.

Trump's policies are increasingly popular among the electorate.
On the Republican side, approximately 8 out of 10 voters replied that they approve of the federal government using the military and the National Guard to assist local police. 51% of government supporters agree with the White House taking control of police departments in major cities.
Trump's anti-crime policies reach their highest popularity among the plurality of voters, as 46% of independents and up to 30% of Democratic supporters said it is acceptable for the federal government to use the military and the National Guard to help local security forces.
In this regard, approval of President Trump's overall performance was 45%, an increase of 5 points compared to a survey by the aforementioned pollster. Meanwhile, more and more Americans trust the direction the economy is heading.

Americans, concerned about crime.
The survey concludes that two thirds of the American public think that crime in the country is a "serious" problem, while 81% believe it is a major issue in large cities. 96% of Republicans see crime in the most populated cities as a major concern, along with 68% of Democrats.
The survey reports a bleak outlook for Democrats, as the results show that the opposition party is having difficulty crafting an effective message for the electorate due to the popular support that Trump's policies to address crime in Washington D.C have.
