Buenos Aires starts 2026 with a clearly marked change of scenery after several days of extreme heat. The thermal relief arrived just before the New Year's toast, with strong wind and some scattered showers in the AMBA.
According to the SMN, the drop in temperatures is going to deepen in the coming days and could lead to unusually low readings for this time of year, especially during the weekend.

A historic year-end because of the heat
Wednesday, December 31 was a stifling day in the City of Buenos Aires and the metropolitan area. Temperatures ranged between 38 and 39.5 degrees, driven by a persistent northwesterly wind.
In the Federal Capital a high of 39.2 °C was recorded, one of the highest values for December since records began. In fact, it was the hottest December 31 ever measured in the city.
Shortly before midnight, a cold front advanced abruptly with gusts that exceeded 50 km/h. That arrival disrupted outdoor celebrations and came along with showers, more intense in the southern part of Greater Buenos Aires.

Temperatures drop and the wind takes center stage
The early hours of January 1 showed a decisive change. The morning started with temperatures close to 20 °C, well below the readings of previous days.
Thursday is expected to have skies from slightly to partly cloudy, no showers, and a wind from the southeast to the south. Highs will be limited to 28 or 29 degrees, consolidating the thermal relief.
In addition, the Río de la Plata experienced a slight rise during the early hours. SMN anticipates new moderate high tides through the weekend, associated with the persistence of the southerly wind.
Cool and windy weekend in AMBA
Between Friday the 2nd and Saturday the 3rd cold air will continue to move in. On Friday lows of 20 °C and highs of 27 °C are expected, with some instability early on.
On Saturday another more defined front will arrive, with southerly gusts that could be around 50 km/h. Highs will be low for January, between 23 and 25 degrees.

Sunday will be the coolest day. In the metropolitan area lows of 11 to 13 °C could be recorded and around 15 °C in the City. In the afternoon, the weather will be pleasant, with sunshine and highs close to 26 degrees.
Showers, for now, appear to be unlikely. Next week would start with stable weather and a slight thermal rebound.
