Federal prosecutor Carlos Stornelli requested on Monday that Argentine justice move forward with the active extradition procedure of the former Venezuelan narco-terrorist dictator Nicolás Maduro, who is currently under arrest in the United States and is subject to an international arrest warrant issued by the federal courts of Comodoro Py.
The decision of the representative of the Public Prosecutor's Office came after he formally joined the request submitted by the plaintiff associations in the case that is investigating serious human rights violations in Venezuela.
The filing was added to case file CFP No. 2001/2023, which is being processed before National Federal Criminal and Correctional Court No. 2, presided over by Judge Sebastián Ramos.
In his brief, Stornelli recorded that "the situation of detention that weighs on the defendant Nicolás Maduro Moros, in the territory of the United States of America, has become public knowledge."

He also recalled that the former Venezuelan dictator "is subject to Your Honor's summons to give an investigative statement, with an arrest warrant in force, all of this by virtue of the order of the Honorable Court of Appeals of the jurisdiction." This way, the prosecutor emphasized that there are pending judicial measures that justify the immediate advancement of the extradition process.
The head of National Federal Criminal and Correctional Prosecutor's Office No. 4 described the motion as "an urgent matter by virtue of the aforementioned state of detention." In that context, he expressed his support for the plaintiffs' request, "requesting that (...), the active extradition procedure be initiated with respect to Nicolás Maduro Moros, for the purpose of subjecting him to the present proceedings." The urgency, according to the prosecutor, is based on the need to ensure that the defendant is placed at the disposal of Argentine justice.
