A high school student in Orange County, California, was suspended after wearing a cap with the slogan "Make America Great Again" (MAGA) at his school, an incident that led to an argument and physical assault against him.
The incident occurred on September 11 at Laguna Beach High School, a day after the murder of conservative activist Charlie Kirk. The student, Zach Hornstein, stated that he wore the cap in solidarity with Kirk.
According to Hornstein's account, at the end of the school day, a female student snatched the cap from him and threw it into a trash can in the women's restroom. In addition, the young woman began to insult President Donald Trump using profane language.

Hornstein replied with an exceptional comment: "If you don't like it here, Canada's borders are open. Feel free to go." However, a teacher informed administrators that the student said something different.
According to Hornstein, the teacher claimed that he told the female students: "Go back to where you came from," a phrase commonly considered offensive and associated with xenophobic rhetoric in Gavin Newsom's socialist regime. Nevertheless, Hornstein keeps that he never said that, and even the same student involved confirmed to administrators that he did not say it.
Hornstein's mother, Janet Semenova, keeps that her son is being unfairly punished for his political beliefs. "I believe there is a double standard. Students with certain political beliefs are being treated differently," she stated.

Semenova also expressed her disappointment with the way the school has handled the case. According to her, her son was a victim of assault, but is being treated as the aggressor.
Both students, the one wearing the cap and the one who confronted him, were suspended for the incident. The mother believes that neither suspension is justified. "We told the administration: 'You are punishing these students and creating an environment of greater hostility instead of fostering a deeper dialogue,'" she explained.
Laguna Beach Unified School District, meanwhile, said that it can't comment on specific disciplinary matters related to students. However, it issued a statement saying: "When disputes arise on campus, schools must evaluate the behavior involved. California law defines the grounds for suspension, and we are reviewing the facts of this situation to ensure it is handled fairly and consistently."

The family met with the school principal the Tuesday following the incident, but he decided to uphold the suspension. In response, the Hornstein family is considering taking the case to the school board to seek a possible revocation or review of the sanction.
The case has sparked debate about freedom of expression in school environments, as well as about the abusive treatment of students with conservative political views. For the Hornsteins, this episode not only represents a lack of justice, but also an example of how certain political speech can be penalized or misinterpreted in today's educational environment.
