3dSen is an emulator that transforms classic 2D NES games into playable 3D dioramas. After a decade in development, it can now be downloaded on Steam in a stable version.

The project reimagines legendary titles like Super Mario Bros, Zelda, or Metroid.

How does 3dSen work and what makes it special?

The 3dSen engine takes 2D sprites and transforms them into fully playable three-dimensional environments. This allows players to see classic elements from different angles and with depth.

What's interesting is that everything remains faithful to the original game. No new graphics are added; instead, the visuals are reconstructed from what was already there, in a new dimension.

Which games can you play in 3D?

The emulator already supports a list of almost 100 NES titles. Among them are:

  • Super Mario Bros
  • The Legend of Zelda
  • Metroid
  • Castlevania
  • Punch-Out!!
  • Tetris
  • Mega Man
  • Dragon Quest

This is not a complete list, but it includes several of the most iconic titles. Obviously, you need to have the ROMs for each game in order to use them.

Its developers explain that 3dSen is not just nostalgia. They want players to see these titles from a new visual perspective without modifying their original mechanics.
