An eventual shift from Washington could unprecedentedly strengthen Argentina's claim of sovereignty over the islands

The President of the United States, Donald Trump, opened the door this Monday to a historic modification of Washington's policy regarding the Falkland Islands by confirming that his administration is reviewing the U.S. position on the sovereignty dispute between Argentina and the United Kingdom.

“I always review all positions. That is just one among many”, Trump responded to reporters in the Oval Office at the White House when specifically asked about the future of the American stance on the archipelago.

The statement takes on exceptional significance because the United States has maintained a formal policy of neutrality regarding the sovereignty of the islands since the mid-19th century. Washington recognizes the de facto British administration, but historically avoided taking a side on either party regarding the sovereignty claims.

Even during the Falklands War in 1982, when the administration of Ronald Reagan ended up providing material support to the United Kingdom, official U.S. documents emphasized that this support did not alter Washington's neutrality on sovereignty.

The new scenario began to take shape on Friday when The Telegraph revealed that Pentagon officials were analyzing various measures to pressure the United Kingdom to raise its defense spending to the 5% of GDP target pushed by Trump for NATO allies.

A senior U.S. official quoted by the British media stated that London would receive “special attention” within the review of military commitments of alliance members and maintained that no alternatives were being ruled out to achieve a greater British contribution.

The White House has not yet announced a recognition of Argentine sovereignty over the islands. However, the fact that Trump himself has publicly left the review open represents a significant diplomatic development for Argentina.

The government of Javier Milei is currently maintaining a stance of “caution and prudence”, avoiding interpreting the statements as a formal change already made. Just weeks ago, U.S. Ambassador Peter Lamelas reaffirmed that Washington remained officially neutral.

If the review ultimately resulted in explicit support for the Argentine claim, the United States would abandon a policy maintained for over a century and produce one of the most significant diplomatic changes for Argentina's position on the Falklands in decades.
