This Sunday, U.S. diplomacy confirmed that efforts to free another American held in Afghanistan were successful

The government of President Donald Trump has just secured the return of Amir Amiri, a U.S. citizen who was held captive in Afghanistan. With this news, five Americans have now been freed from the hands of the Taliban thanks to the efforts of the current Republican administration.

Amiri had been detained without any reason on Afghan soil since December 2024. His release was celebrated by U.S. diplomacy, which also thanked Qatar for serving as a mediator during the process.

"The United States welcomes U.S. citizen Amir Amiri, who was unjustly detained in Afghanistan", begins the statement from Washington. The State Department's statement attributes Amiri's return to President Donald Trump's “leadership and commitment to the American people.”

"While this marks an important step forward, other Americans remain unjustly detained in Afghanistan. President Trump won't rest until all our captive citizens are back home," warned the department led by Marco Rubio.

In January, citizens Ryan Corbett, William McKenty, George Glezmann, and Faye Hall—the latter detained by the Taliban in March for operating a drone without authorization—were released by the Afghan terrorist group, also thanks to the efforts of Trump's White House.

The monarchy of Qatar—which has helped mediate other disputes in the Middle East, including the war in Gaza—worked to negotiate a meeting between Amiri and the U.S. special envoy, Adam Boehler, in Afghanistan last March.

Negotiations continued for months until a major breakthrough was achieved over the weekend, securing the release of the U.S. citizen. It is still unclear why Amiri was abducted by the Taliban forces, nor whether the Afghan government received anything in exchange for this agreement.
