The president of the United States, Donald Trump, warned that he could invoke the Insurrection Act in the Democratic state of Minnesota if local authorities do not act to stop the violent protests against federal operations targeting illegal immigration.
The message was released by the president himself through his account on the social network Truth Social and comes in a context of growing tension between left-wing extremists and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
In his post, Trump pointed directly at the local Democratic political leadership and linked the security situation to the actions of organized groups.
Donald Trump, presidente de Estados Unidos.
"If the corrupt politicians in Minnesota do not obey the law or prevent professional agitators and insurrectionists from attacking the patriots of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), who are only trying to do their job, I will invoke the Insurrection Act, as many presidents have done before me, and I will quickly put an end to the farce that is taking place in that once-great state. Thank you for your attention to this matter!", wrote the president.
The presidential warning comes amid a series of riots that have been unfolding for several weeks in different parts of the state. In this context, far-left groups have been leading violent demonstrations in opposition to the operations to deport illegal immigrants carried out by ICE. In that setting, there have been attacks, harassment, and assaults against federal agents, with numerous officers injured during the clashes.
In his message, President Trump focused heavily on the defense of the federal forces, which he defined as "patriots" who "are only trying to do their job", and on the responsibility of state authorities to ensure the enforcement of law and order. At the same time, the U.S. president maintained that the lack of action by Minnesota's leaders will trigger a direct response from the federal government.

The Insurrection Act, mentioned explicitly by the president, is a federal statute of the United States that grants the president the authority to deploy the U.S. military nationwide and to federalize National Guard units of the states under certain circumstances.
Its application is envisaged for specific situations in which the Executive Branch considers that local governments can't or do not want to control riots that affect internal order.
