Trump left open the possibility of military action in Venezuela during Operation Southern Spear

Donald Trump spoke bluntly in an interview with Politico, stating that Nicolás Maduro "has his days numbered." He said it without hesitation and did not rule out the possibility of military intervention:"I don't comment on that," he replied when asked if he would send troops. His silence was more eloquent than a confirmation.

The conversation exposed the exact point at which Washington and Caracas stand:a scenario where every word can escalate tension. Any military move is no longer a distant hypothesis.

Organized crime, migration, and an inherited system

Trump also claimed that the Venezuelan regime had sent people linked to crime to the United States. He mentioned prisoners, individuals from psychiatric institutions, and members of drug trafficking networks. He again pointed to the Tren de Aragua and connected it with the Cártel de los Soles.

For Trump, this phenomenon expanded because he inherited "a weakened border system". According to him, the Biden administration failed to contain the migration crisis. In the interview, he repeated that he would not discuss "military strategy" with a media outlet he considers critical, but every statement left a possibility open.

When he was asked what the United States seeks in Venezuela, he replied that it wants "the Venezuelan people to be treated well". He also spoke about his relationship with the Venezuelan diaspora, especially in Florida. He mentioned the Doral Community and recalled the electoral support he received there.

For Trump, many of those Venezuelan citizens contribute to the country. He said his immigration stance prioritizes admitting those who can "contribute." The message was direct: to separate migrants who work and integrate from those who, according to him, are sent by the regime to commit crimes.

Lanza del Sur: the backdrop of the escalation

Trump's statements come amid operation "Lanza del Sur," the largest show of force by the United States in the Caribbean in recent years. The initiative was announced on November 13, 2025. Its stated objective:to combat drug trafficking and "narco-terrorism" in the Western Hemisphere.

The deployment is led by Southern Command. It includes the aircraft carrier USS Gerald Ford, destroyers, a cruiser, a submarine, and P-8 Poseidon aircraft.About 15,000 troops are participating in the operation, including 4,000 marines; and the Pentagon reported that the campaign began informally in August and adopted its official name in November.

In military terms, it is a forceful message. In political terms, a warning.

Caracas's response and the risk of an incident

The Venezuelan regime rejected the operation and described it as "a warmongering escalation." In response, it announced the deployment of 200,000 military personnel. It also threatened possible incidents in maritime routes where U.S. vessels operate.

Meanwhile, Washington confirmed several attacks against vessels linked to drug trafficking both in the Caribbean and the Eastern Pacific. There were two notable episodes: one on November 1, with three dead; another on November 14, with four fatalities. The United States reported that the boats were transporting narcotics and sailing along routes identified by intelligence agencies.

Mexico, a key ally, established protocols so that interceptions in international waters are carried out by its own forces. They seek to avoid unilateral actions that could cross the boundaries of international law.

The interview did not reveal an imminent decision, but it did show something equally relevant: Trump did not close any doors.Maduro is under military, diplomatic, and criminal pressure. Washington is speaking more and more forcefully, while Caracas responds with internal mobilization.
