The authorities in the United States captured Alina Rosales Aguirreurreta, daughter of Cuban General Ulises Rosales del Toro, one of the most important historical leaders of the communist regime established by Fidel Castro. The news generated a strong reaction among sectors of the Cuban exile community and reignited the debate over the privileges and international connections of families linked to the Castro leadership.

Ulises Rosales del Toro was for decades one of the most powerful figures within the Cuban political and military structure. He was a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of Cuba, held ministerial positions, and participated directly in the security and defense apparatus of the regime. Additionally, he maintained a close relationship with both Fidel Castro and Raúl Castro for much of the history of the revolutionary government.

The capture of his daughter occurs in a particularly delicate context for the Cuban regime, marked by a deep economic crisis, massive blackouts, food shortages, and increasing international pressure against the government of Miguel Díaz-Canel. In recent months, the United States has once again hardened its stance towards Havana as various opposition sectors push initiatives to advance towards a democratic and multiparty transition on the island.

Although not all the details of the arrest or the exact charges Alina Rosales would face have officially emerged, the case has already begun to generate political impact due to the historical weight of her family within the Cuban system. On social media and in exile media, several anti-Castro leaders pointed to the episode as a demonstration of the international connections of members of the Cuban ruling elite.

The case has also revived historical criticisms against sectors of the regime accused of maintaining economic privileges and access to the outside world while a large part of the Cuban population endures one of the worst social and energy crises since the fall of the Soviet Union.

Meanwhile, the Cuban regime has not yet issued an official statement regarding the capture. It has also not been revealed whether Havana will undertake diplomatic efforts with Washington related to the case.

The situation occurs amid a growing deterioration of relations between Cuba and the United States, marked by new sanctions, mutual accusations, and reports of human rights violations within the island.
