The United States Congress denounced the widespread censorship promoted by the European Union.

The United States lower house has pointed out in an announcement the dangers posed by censorship from the European Union following an investigation

The United States House of Representatives Judiciary Committee, led by Republicans, published a preliminary report titled "The Threat of Foreign Censorship: How the Digital Services Act of the European Union Forces Global Censorship and Infringes on American Free Speech."

This document reveals how the European Union (EU), through the implementation of the Digital Services Act (DSA), is imposing censorship standards that affect not only European citizens but also freedom of expression in the United States and around the world.

One of the key findings of the report is that the DSA requires major global technology platforms, such as social networks, to modify their content moderation policies worldwide to comply with the EU's regulatory demands.

The EU held a secret workshop to demand greater censorship.

Since these companies generally apply a single global policy, any change required by the EU directly affects the United States. This means that European standards, which restrict "hate speech," end up being applied to American citizens, whose freedom of expression is protected by the First Amendment of the Constitution.

The Committee obtained documents proving this policy, including internal communications between the European Commission and technology platforms, through subpoenas. In particular, a workshop held in May of this year stands out, where European regulators privately discussed with these platforms their expectations regarding how content should be moderated.

One of the exercises in that workshop classified a typical political content post, where users of this social network highlighted the need to take back their country from illegal immigration, as hate speech, which demonstrates an extremely broad and dangerous interpretation of this concept by European authorities.

The threat to platforms that do not comply with censorship.

Another alarming aspect of the report is that the censorship approach is clearly unilateral, targeting almost exclusively right-leaning positions. The documentation obtained shows that censored topics include legitimate debates about immigration, the environment, and even political satire that are labeled as problematic.

In addition, the report emphasizes that the penalties imposed by the DSA on platforms that do not comply with these rules are extremely severe: deterrent fines of up to 6% of their global revenue, along with the possibility of being temporarily blocked within European territory.

The Committee concludes that this regulatory extraterritoriality represents a direct threat to the freedom of expression of American citizens who seek to express themselves freely. By requiring platforms to change their global policies to adapt to European dictates, the EU is exporting its restrictive standards and limiting political debate worldwide.
