U.S. aircraft intercepted a Russian surveillance aircraft near Alaska

Third incident in one week involving reconnaissance flights in the air defense zone

The North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) reported that it intercepted a Russian surveillance aircraft identified as an Il-20 in the Alaska Air Defense Identification Zone (ADIZ).

This is the third incident in a week in which U.S. aircraft have replied to incursions by Russian planes in this international strip near the sovereign airspace of the United States and Canada.

Interception operation

According to the official statement, the operation included the deployment of an E-3 Sentry control aircraft, two F-16 fighters, and two KC-135 tanker aircraft. The mission was limited to intercepting and visually identifying the Russian aircraft, which at all times remained in international airspace.

NORAD emphasized that this type of Russian activity occurs regularly and is not considered a threat, although it requires an immediate response for national security reasons.

What is the Alaska Air Defense Identification Zone

The Alaska ADIZ is a stretch of international airspace adjacent to the territory of the United States and Canada. Every aircraft entering must identify itself to the authorities of both countries.

NORAD clarified that its function is to monitor and require that immediate identification to protect the security of North America.

On August 20 and 21, interceptions of Russian Il-20 aircraft of the same type were also recorded. During 2024 and 2025, NORAD has detected similar flights in April, July, and at the beginning of this year.

Even in September 2024, images were released of an encounter with a Russian Su-35 that was described as "unsafe and unprofessional" by U.S. military commanders.

Layered defense and permanent alert

The command highlighted that it has a layered defensive network composed of satellites, ground and airborne radars, as well as fighter jets ready to react to any incursion. "NORAD remains prepared to employ different response options in defense of North America," the agency stated.

Although authorities acknowledge the recurrence of these Russian incursions, they emphasize that all remain within international airspace and do not represent a direct threat to the sovereignty of the United States or Canada.
