The human rights organization Foro Penal reported that there are currently 490 people detained for political reasons in Venezuela, in a context where the amnesty process promoted by the authorities continues, in a partial way.
According to the report, among that total there are 44 foreigners or citizens with dual nationality, reflecting the international reach of the arrests. The report also details that 303 of those arrested are civilians and 187 belong to military forces
. Demonstrations against the Venezuelan regime
Regarding gender composition, the NGO indicated that 445 of the political prisoners are men and 45 women, including at least one minor among the
detainees.
The report is being released while the Venezuelan regime is carrying out a process of release within the framework of an amnesty law.
However, the Criminal Forum points out that the releases have occurred gradually and in a limited manner, without achieving a substantial reduction in the total number of detainees.
Recent data indicate that only a portion of those arrested have received a final court ruling, evidencing delays in judicial proceedings.
This situation has been identified by human rights organizations as a relevant factor in the system of politically motivated detention in the country.
Venezuelan political prisoners being released
The monitoring of these cases is part of the work of Foro Penal, an NGO that provides legal aid to detainees and that produces regular reports on the situation of political prisoners
in Venezuela.
Its figures are used as a reference by different international organizations to assess the state of human rights in the country.
The number of 490 detainees is part of a downward trend compared to previous years, when higher numbers were recorded, although a significant number of people are still being held in detention for political reasons.
This trend was seen thanks to the actions of the Donald Trump administration, which carried out the arrest of former Venezuelan dictator Nicolás Maduro and forced the regime to release political prisoners.
In this context, the progress of the amnesty process continues to be observed both locally and internationally, depending on its real impact on the situation of the detainees and the evolution of the Venezuelan judicial system.
