Vicky and Majo Granatto are experiencing hours of intense emotion after being crowned world champions with Las Leonas. The Argentine team drew 1-1 with the Netherlands and won in the Australian penalty shootout at the Wagener Stadium in Amstelveen on Saturday, August 29.
The title adds to those achieved in Perth 2002 and Rosario 2010. Majo Granatto, who wore the captain's armband, scored a decisive goal and had a key performance. Together with her sister Vicky, also a member of the squad, they lifted the World Cup and fulfilled a shared dream.
Both were born in La Plata and trained at the Santa Bárbara club. They shared a team in the national selection and wrote a historic page for Argentine hockey. The final against the Dutch was marked by the presence of the two sisters on the same championship team.
Before hockey took center stage in their lives, the Granatto family already had a strong identity linked to football. On their mother's side, they are fans of Boca, and Majo recalled more than once the improvised matches of her childhood in Varela with her cousins.
From childhood games to La Bombonera
In those imaginary matches, the current captain of Las Leonas transformed into Martín Palermo while a cousin played Juan Román Riquelme. Her sisters watched from the outside, as if they were part of the crowd.
Years later, that admiration for Riquelme had a special moment. On April 3, 2022, Majo personally met the idol at La Bombonera and took a photo with him wearing Boca jerseys, one of them personalized with the name “MAJO 10”. On her social media, she wrote: “An unforgettable day for me. And one of the happiest,” and thanked her parents for making her a fan of the club.
Hockey, however, has always been the common thread of the family. Mariquena and Delfina, also sisters of Vicky and Majo, played the same sport. The four are only two years apart and took their first steps with the stick and ball at the Círculo Universitario de Quilmes.
The story of these world champion sisters with Las Leonas is that of a family that combined athletic effort with a passion for Boca. They shared a team at different stages, and this Saturday, August 29, they managed to lift the cup together in an unforgettable final.
