After securing their place in the final of the 2026 World Cup, the Argentine footballers did not heed the warning against bringing flags with political messages
The Argentine National Team's qualification for the final of the 2026 World Cup left an iconic image after the final whistle. Following the 2-1 victory over England in Atlanta, several Argentine players displayed a banner reading "The Falklands are Argentine," despite warnings from the organization about political demonstrations.
After the match at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, a group of players led by Giovani Lo Celso placed a white banner on the grass with the phrase "The Falklands are Argentine."
The clash between Argentina and England had been deemed high-risk by U.S. authorities due to the historical rivalry between the two countries.
For this reason, days before the match, a significant security operation was organized, coordinated between U.S. agencies, FIFA, and representatives from both countries. More than 1,600 personnel were deployed inside and around the stadium to prevent incidents.
Additionally, the organization had warned that the entry of flags, shirts, or any items with political or hate messages among the spectators would not be allowed.
During the press conference prior to the match, coach Lionel Scaloni had tried to downplay the historical context surrounding the game and stated that the confrontation should be understood solely from a sporting perspective.
However, after Argentina's qualification, the message displayed by some players made it clear that for part of the team, the match also carried a special symbolic weight.
