Indigenous rejection exposed fractures in the pact between Pachakutik and Correísmo
Jorge Herrera criticized the lack of legitimacy in the agreement and called it a betrayal
Jorge Herrera, former president of Conaie, publicly rejected the political agreement between Correísmo and certain indigenous leaders. He stated that the signing of the pact in Chimborazo represents a break with the historical principles of the indigenous movement.
According to Herrera, the agreement with the Citizen Revolution was not consulted with the grassroots and responds solely to situational interests. He emphasized that decisions must emanate from the organized people and not from pacts between political elites.
The former leader also questioned the legitimacy of the act, pointing out that the history of indigenous resistance can't be used as electoral currency. For Herrera, these types of actions ignore the sacrifice and struggle of decades that have characterized the indigenous movement in Ecuador.

He called on the citizenry and social organizations to remain firm against attempts at political manipulation. In his view, the pact between Pachakutik and the Citizen Revolution doesn't represent the collective will, but rather particular interests.
Finally, he recalled that every achievement of the indigenous peoples was the result of sustained resistance. He reiterated that the spilled blood is not negotiable and that the path to social justice must continue to be guided by democratic participation.
Jorge Herrera's reaction highlighted a fracture within the indigenous movement in the face of Correísmo. The defense of a historical struggle can't be subordinated to opportunistic pacts that distort the true sentiment of the communities.
