The mass deportation strained diplomatic relations between Ecuador and Colombia.

Colombian authorities reported a lack of protocol, while Ecuador stated that it respected individual judicial processes

Colombia received the second group of deported prisoners from Ecuador on July 29. Colombian authorities expressed their protest against a procedure they considered unilateral and uncoordinated.

The figure exceeds 700 deportees, adding to at least 410 previous returns through Rumichaca. Colombia reported that there was no official notification or prior humanitarian protocol.

Colombian authorities stated that many deportees entered without clear legal verification of their status. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs described the action as an "unfriendly gesture" from the Ecuadorian government.

Ecuador replied that it had notified since July 8 and defended that it had acted through judicial resolutions on a case-by-case basis. According to Quito, the process complied with legality and guaranteed due process.

Experts warn that migratory movements of such magnitude must have formal binational protocols. The absence of a prior agreement underscores the weakness of institutional coordination inherited from centralist models.

In a context of increasing criminal violence in Ecuador, the government sought to relieve prison overcrowding. However, the lack of clarity in the procedures amplifies fears about respect for human rights.

The operation reflected the need for regional coordination on security and penitentiary justice issues. Colombia insisted on joint protocols and Ecuador currently faces criticism for its unilateral execution.
