In record time, the United States, along with international partners, secured the enriched uranium.

The government of President Donald Trump has completed the removal of all remaining enriched uranium from a legacy research reactor in Venezuela, representing a significant victory for nuclear security for the United States and the continent.

The National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA), an agency under the U.S. Department of Energy, safely removed 13.5 kilograms of uranium from the RV-1 reactor, with the material being securely packaged in a fuel container and then escorted overland to a Venezuelan port.

The uranium was loaded onto a ship for transport to the United States, arriving on U.S. shores in early May. Upon arrival, U.S. teams unloaded the containers and transported the material to the Savannah River nuclear plant for processing and reuse.

The uranium was enriched to 20%

"The safe removal of all enriched uranium from Venezuela sends another signal to the world of a restored and renewed Venezuela," said NNSA Administrator Brandon Williams. "Thanks to President Trump's decisive leadership, dedicated teams on the ground completed in months what would normally have taken years," the official added.

The uranium, which came from the RV-1 reactor, had become surplus material and was from a physical and nuclear research effort that ended in 1991. The material was enriched above the critical threshold of 20%, making its removal a matter of national security significance.

The transfer of this uranium was coordinated by NNSA personnel along with the State Department and officials from the Venezuelan government. The visit of U.S. Secretary of Energy Chris Wright to Caracas in February and the overthrow of former communist dictator Nicolás Maduro in January made this process possible.

While previous administrations often allowed dangerous issues to stagnate in bureaucratic timelines, the Department of Energy noted that this mission was completed in months instead of years thanks to Trump's decisive leadership.
