The New York Justice system released a woman from any criminal responsibility for brutally murdering her two children due to suffering from "postpartum psychosis"

A New York judge declared a mother who killed her two children in a shelter not guilty by reason of insanity for allegedly suffering from "postpartum psychosis", in a case that bears chilling similarities to that of nurse Lindsay Clancy, the infanticide that feminists turned into a symbol.

The mother, Dimone Fleming, 26, escaped any criminal responsibility despite confessing to murdering her two children —Daishawn Fleming, 3 years old, and Octavius Canada, 11 months— in a family shelter in the Bronx. The forensic psychiatrist who evaluated her stated that the accused was "severely psychotic and disconnected from reality."

According to the professional, Fleming committed the homicides because she was suffering from hallucinations, was convinced that the world was ending, and believed that a spirit had invaded her body, so she had to "purify" her children by taking their lives. The accused had been hospitalized in a psychiatric facility for two months, where she was diagnosed with major depressive disorder and prescribed medication.

However, the killer did not take the prescribed medications and instead consumed marijuana daily, which worsened her mental health symptoms.

On the night of November 26, 2022, a shelter employee called the police after noticing water and smoke coming from Fleming's apartment. The officers found the mother "acting irrationally" and took her to a hospital for evaluation, not realizing that there were two lifeless children under a pile of clothes in the bathtub, until Fleming's then-boyfriend and father of one of the children found them shortly after.

Fleming confessed to being the perpetrator of the crime and was charged with first-degree murder. However, because the New York justice system determined that prosecuting her "does not prevent and cannot prevent these crimes from occurring," she will not go to jail. Now, a judge will determine her referral to a mental health center where she could remain hospitalized for months or years.
