The State Department warned on Monday that the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) is an organization that functions as an appendage of the Democratic Party and competes in its internal elections, has connections with the intelligence services of the Cuban regime.
The Washington report highlights the deep connections of the DSA with organizations linked to Cuban intelligence, including one sanctioned by the U.S. government. The group already belongs to the National Network on Cuba (NNOC), which is linked to the sanctioned Cuban Institute of Friendship with the Peoples (ICAP), whose founder was Fidel Castro and one of its leaders was convicted of spying for the communist regime in the 90s.
The organization - whose main figures include, for example, Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio Cortez and Mayor Zohran Mamdani, and has been gaining influence within the Democratic Party - has sent delegations to Cuba and has established "formal channels of communication" with the Castro dictatorship.
"The DSA has built a national infrastructure dedicated to moving extreme left policies from the margins to the center stage, and with it, a deep and lasting devotion to the Cuban regime," says the State Department report. The same document highlights that Cuba can activate protests in the U.S. if Trump decides to attack the communist island.
Direct line with the dictatorship since 2019
Since 2019, along with other leftist groups such as Code Pink, the American Communist Party, and the Workers' Socialist Party, the DSA has been part of the NNOC, placing Havana at the forefront of its foreign policy agenda. At the end of 2020, the organization urged its base of 85,000 members to join a coordinated campaign "against the illegal embargo on Cuba" along with the NNOC.
