Steve Hilton gains ground in a key county and challenges Democratic dominance in California

The Republican candidate for governor of California, Steve Hilton, is showing signs of strength in one of the most populated and politically relevant areas of the state, surpassing Democrat Xavier Becerra among voters in Orange County, a result that could become a warning sign for the Democratic Party ahead of the November elections.

A poll from the University of California, Irvine, conducted between June 9 and June 12, showed Hilton with 47% voter intention in Orange County, compared to Becerra's 44%. The result is particularly significant because it is the third most populated county in California and a territory that, despite its political transformation over the last decade, still retains a significant Republican base.

Hilton celebrated the results and presented them as evidence of a growing rejection of California's political direction. "We have surpassed Becerra in the third largest county in California," the candidate stated. "Millions of Californians are saying: enough. We are going to fix California."

One of the most favorable elements for Hilton is his strong support within the Republican electorate. 94% of Republicans surveyed in Orange County expressed their support for the candidate, compared to 82% of Democrats who back Becerra. Although Democrats maintain an advantage among independents, 46% for Becerra versus 38% for Hilton, the solid Republican backing allows the GOP candidate to stay ahead overall in the county.

The importance of Orange County goes beyond a single poll. Historically considered a Republican stronghold, the county has undergone considerable political transformation over the last decade and currently has more Democratic voters than Republicans. However, nearly a third of its voters are not affiliated with any party, making the territory a particularly competitive landscape.

Indeed, Hilton's ability to attract moderate and independent voters could become one of his main strengths. Jon Gould, the director of the poll, noted that the Republican candidate presents a less ideological image than other conservative aspirants who participated in the primaries.

This strategy may also help him navigate one of the biggest challenges for any Republican aspiring to govern California: the limited popularity of President Donald Trump in the state. Trump publicly endorsed Hilton, who has made it clear that he greatly values the president's support, but at the same time has sought to focus his campaign on local issues and the citizens' discontent with the current state of California.

One of his most striking actions was a full-page ad that directly posed the question: "Can you be against Trump and still vote for me?" The strategy reflects Hilton's attempt to widen his electorate without giving up the support of the Republican base.

Nevertheless, the statewide race remains uphill. A poll from the California Institute of Public Policy published in mid-July showed Becerra with a 25-point lead among likely voters: 61% to Hilton's 36%.

Still, Hilton's performance in Orange County demonstrates that there is room for a competitive Republican campaign based on rejection of the status quo, the search for a more moderate conservative alternative, and mobilization of independents. With the elections scheduled for November 3, Hilton still faces a significant statewide deficit, but his results in a key county provide an argument for those who believe the contest could be more competitive than state polls suggest.
