The Chief Justice of the United States, John Roberts, allowed Trump to continue with the construction at the White House after leftist groups demanded it be halted and sued for the restoration of the East Wing of the presidential residence, which has now been demolished.
"It is ordered that the temporary restraining order issued on April 16, 2026, by the United States District Court for the District of Columbia... be suspended pending a subsequent order from the undersigned or the court," Roberts ruled, reversing a lower court's decision.
Trump is building, without using taxpayer funds, a ballroom to host large events at the White House. Additionally, directly beneath the new presidential ballroom, a massive underground complex with bunker functions and emergency military operations center is being constructed. The opposition argues that this project is not permitted because Congress has not granted authorization and wants to stop it in court.

According to Democrats and other leftist groups, presidents do not have the authority to make such substantial changes to the White House. This is a lie as all presidents have made some changes, large or small, to the presidential residence. In Trump's case, the changes are being funded by private contributions.
