There were 3 dead and 41 shot over the last weekend, and a total of 288 homicides have been recorded so far this year in the city governed by the Democrats
President Donald Trump warned on Tuesday that Chicago "will die" if the Democratic governor of Illinois, JB Pritzker, and the far-left mayor of the city, Brandon Johnson, do not accept federal government help to combat crime, following a violent weekend that saw the largest shooting of the year so far.
"Violence in Chicago is out of control and at record levels. It has never been worse! These numbers are becoming normalized. It is out of control!", the president wrote on his social media, warning that the city will continue to deteriorate if the Democratic politicians governing it do not seek federal assistance to combat crime.
"The city will die if the Federal Government, a perfectly tuned crime-fighting machine, is not invited to HELP by the mayor or the governor. I am waiting for the call", Trump warned.
Last weekend, fifteen people at a family gathering were shot by four armed men in the Washington Park neighborhood of the city. A 35-year-old male died and 14 others were injured. In another shooting, Kyren Wormely, a 15-year-old teenager, died after being attacked from a moving vehicle.
The Democratic mayor and governor reject Trump's aid
Chicago has recorded 1,255 shooting victims so far this year, a 0.7% increase compared to the same period in 2025. Additionally, the city has recorded 288 homicide victims, a 2.9% rise compared to the 280 from the same period last year. The number of people shot to death stood at 254, representing an 11.4% increase over the same period in 2025.
Despite these devastating figures, Johnson and Pritzker refuse to call Trump for federal interventionin Chicago to restore order. The president cited his intervention in Washington DC as the ideal model for combating crime. "No one should be forced to live under these conditions. Like in DC and other places, they will have almost zero crime, FAST! The State and the City cannot do what I do. Governor Pritzker, CALL!", he declared.
Trump is expected to visit the Chicago area at the end of this month for the Presidents Cup golf tournament at the Medinah Country Club, which begins on September 24 and is an event where the Republican mogul will serve as honorary president.
