Louisiana Republicans voted this Saturday to expel the current state senator Bill Cassidy, who at the time voted to condemn President Donald Trump in the impeachment pushed by the Democratic Party in 2021.
Cassidy came in third place behind his rivals in the primary. But since neither Congresswoman Julia Letlow nor State Treasurer John Fleming managed to surpass the 50% vote threshold, a runoff to decide who will be the Republican Party candidate to represent Louisiana in the Senate will take place on June 27.
Trump launched a final attack against Cassidy on Saturday as voters headed to the polls. The president reminded his supporters that, in 2021, the senator voted to impeach him after the Capitol riots on January 6, 2021. "Bill Cassidy is scum, a terrible guy who is BAD FOR LOUISIANA," he commented.
In a column from February 2021, Cassidy wrote that Trump was the "scriptwriter and inciter" of the riot and that he was "actively subverting the peaceful transition of power." The now-defeated senator also blocked many of the nominees to be Trump administration officials, especially in the health area, as was the case with the nominee for Surgeon General, Dr. Casey Means.

Trump has been supporting Letlow since January to replace Cassidy in the Senate. "The highly respected congresswoman of 'America First', Julia Letlow, from the wonderful state of Louisiana, is a great star, she has been from the beginning and keeps getting better!" the president posted on Friday on his Truth Social network. "Election day is tomorrow, Saturday, May 16. Vote for Julia Letlow! She has my complete and total endorsement, and she will never let you down!".
Two weeks ago, Trump took revenge on a handful of Indiana Republicans who opposed his redistricting plan. With Cassidy's defeat, the White House is already looking for the president to achieve another victory: defeating Kentucky Representative Thomas Massie, who also betrayed him.
"This shows that everything really revolves around Trump", concluded political analyst Ryan Girdusky to The Daily Wire. "It shows that voters have an innate belief that he seeks the best for them and feels the same anger they feel at the betrayal of elected officials".
