The President of the United States, Donald Trump, announced this Friday that the U.S. Southern Command executed a “kinetic, rapid, and lethal” attack that resulted in the death of Héctor Guerrero Flores, alias “Niño Guerrero,” identified as the top leader of the Tren de Aragua, the Venezuelan megaband that Washington classified as a terrorist organization.

The announcement marks one of the hardest blows against the international structure of the Tren de Aragua, an organization born in Venezuela that in recent years has expanded its operations to various countries in Latin America and also to U.S. territory, with ties to drug trafficking, human trafficking, extortion, kidnappings, and other serious crimes.

Trump stated that the operation was carried out under his orders by SOUTHCOM and that the military action allowed for the elimination of one of the most wanted criminals in the region. In his message, the U.S. president asserted that the Tren de Aragua is one of the most violent criminal organizations on the planet and emphasized that his administration had promised to take action against the cartels and foreign gangs operating inside and outside the United States.

The president also pointed to the management of Joe Biden, whom he accused of having opened the southern border and allowed the entry of illegal criminals who later committed crimes on U.S. soil. According to Trump, during his campaign, he committed to expelling those criminals and bringing justice to the families of the victims.

Among the cases mentioned by the president were those of Jocelyn Nungaray, 12 years old, and Laken Riley, 22, two crimes that in the United States became symbols of the debate over illegal immigration, border security, and imported criminal violence.

Trump also noted that at the beginning of his administration, he fulfilled the promise to designate the Tren de Aragua as a foreign terrorist organization, deport thousands of criminals, and declare war on the cartels. In this context, he presented the death of “Niño Guerrero” as part of a more aggressive security policy against transnational narco-criminal structures.

Another relevant point of the announcement was the coordination with Venezuela. Trump himself assured that the operation was closely worked with “friends in Venezuela,” with whom, he said, the United States maintains a good relationship. The phrase confirms an important geopolitical shift in the fight against a gang that expanded for years under the Venezuelan institutional collapse.

“The Tren de Aragua no longer has a safe refuge in Venezuela or anywhere else,” warned Trump, who assured that under his leadership, the United States will pursue these criminals “at any time and in any place.”
