With a last-minute change of votes, the Republican bloc gave Trump a victory in the Senate in the conflict with Iran

The United States Senate late Wednesday rejected a measure aimed at restricting the president's war powers against Iran, granting a key victory to Donald Trump just hours after a heated meeting with Republican senators that, according to witnesses, ended in a high-tension atmosphere.

The initiative failed by a vote of 50 to 47, on a day when Republican senators Susan Collins and Lisa Murkowski broke ranks to vote with the Democratic opposition. A day earlier, four Republican senators aligned with the party establishment and with an anti-Trump tendency had distanced themselves from the president on a similar resolution, making Wednesday's vote a celebrated triumph for the White House.

"Wow! The Senate just changed its vote on Iran from 50-48 against to 50-47 in favor", Trump celebrated on his social media. "Rand Paul and Bill Cassidy changed their stance. Thanks to leader John Thune, Lindsey Graham, Bernie Moreno, and everyone. This vote puts Iran on notice!".

The rejected resolution, sponsored by Democrat Tim Kaine, called on the White House to "withdraw U.S. Armed Forces from hostilities within or against Iran", unless it had explicit approval from Congress. Had it passed, the legislation would have forced Trump to resort to a presidential veto to block it.

Currently, Trump and his team are navigating the 60-day period established in the peace agreement framework to negotiate Tehran's nuclear program and the easing of economic sanctions. In parallel, the president ordered the U.S. military to escort commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz against possible Iranian hostilities, a measure that has already stabilized oil prices to pre-war levels.
