Mexico yields: the ban on transgenic corn is lifted following USMCA ruling

The dispute between Mexico and the United States over the importation of transgenic corn has come to an end. The Mexican government has withdrawn the ban following a USMCA panel ruling, which determined that the restrictions lacked scientific basis and violated the trade agreement.

The Mexican government had limited its use for human consumption due to alleged health and biodiversity risks. However, the panel concluded that Mexico did not present sufficient evidence to justify the measure. To avoid trade sanctions, it was decided to lift the restriction.

Since the beginning of the conflict, the United States exerted pressure, arguing that the ban harmed its exporters. Currently, 90% of the corn produced in that country is transgenic.

The government of Claudia Sheinbaum complied with the resolution to avoid tensions with its main trading partner. Nevertheless, the measure affects Mexico's food sovereignty. Various sectors have expressed concern about the dependence on imported corn and the potential impact on native varieties.

Mexican producers have also expressed their discontent. They believe that the massive arrival of transgenic corn will affect national production and allow greater dominance of foreign companies in the agricultural sector.

Implications and future challenges

The main challenge is to ensure the food security of the population, guaranteeing access to nutritious and affordable food. Biodiversity must also be protected to prevent contamination of native crops.

Another key challenge is to strengthen national production through sustainable agricultural practices and greater support for small producers. Reducing dependence on imports will be essential for the local economy.

Finally, it is necessary to establish mechanisms for dialogue and cooperation among the countries involved. Addressing the challenges of biotechnology and food trade will allow balancing trade agreements with the protection of Mexico's health, biodiversity, and food sovereignty.
