Clarification about the publication referring to Gonzalo Alonso

Derecha Diario Uruguay published a few days ago a tweet by Gonzalo Alonso, a student at the Catholic University of Uruguay, in which reference was made to “killing soldiers”.

We considered

at the time - and we still consider - that the decision to publish it had all the journalistic logic in the world. In the current context of concern about the revival of violent discourses in certain sectors of the Uruguayan left, any message of that nature that circulates on social networks deserves to be made visible and put into

public debate.

Later, Gonzalo Alonso contacted us, requested the removal of the publication and explained that it was a misunderstanding: according to his version, the message was part of a role-playing context or irony between acquaintances and was taken out of context.

In the event that it was indeed ironic or part of a private joke, we apologize for not being able to identify that nuance. Derecha Diario Uruguay had no way of knowing the supposed private context behind the publication.

However, in order to prevent the issue from escalating unnecessarily, we have proceeded to remove the content.

We reaffirm that, from a journalistic perspective, it was legitimate and responsible to share such a message when it appears in public space, especially in a country with Uruguay's history of political violence. Calls for violence, although later tried to be explained as irony, cannot be

trivialized.
