The deputy and historic leader of the Communist Party, Ana Olivera, announced her resignation from the Chamber of Representatives, which will take effect on March 1, 2026. The decision, formally communicated during the session on December 11, 2025, is mainly, allegedly, to "make way for new generations."
She will receive a subsidy
Ana Olivera will be entitled to receive the subsidy granted to legislators who leave their position, in accordance with current legislation.
The right to this subsidy is protected by Law No. 15,900 and Law No. 16,195, which establish special benefits for elective positions.
As requirements, the benefit is granted to legislators who leave public office, with the purpose of "easing" their retirement. It is something similar to unemployment insurance.
The amount of the subsidy is equivalent to a legislator's salary, which is among the highest in American countries, approximately US$ 11,884.
The subsidy is paid monthly for a specific period, which generally coincides with half the legislative term they served, as long as they do not take another paid public position.

In this case, Olivera was a legislator for 10 months, so she will receive a subsidy for 5 months, which will be paid by all Uruguayans with their taxes.
