Corruption: Charles Carrera one step away from prison

Charles Carrera, former senator of the Frente Amplio (MPP - FA) of Uruguay and former general director of the Secretariat of the Ministry of the Interior during the FA government.

He has been the subject of a judicial investigation for serious irregularities in the use of the Police Hospital. 

The corruption case centers on the medical care provided for three years to Víctor Hernández, a civilian who was shot in La Paloma (Rocha), by a gunshot from a police officer at a private party in 2021. 

According to the accusation, Carrera authorized irregular payments and the improper use of public resources to benefit this third party, acting deceitfully and taking advantage of confidential information derived from his position.

A shameless corrupt

The corruption case was initially investigated by prosecutor Silvia Porteiro under the charge of abuse of functions. 

Carrera resigned his parliamentary immunity so that the investigation could proceed, but he keeps an office in the Legislative Palace as a collaborator of the FA.

Formalization hearing 

On June 11, 2025, Judge Lorena Juliano formalized the investigation against the former Frente Amplio legislator for three crimes: fraud (in concurrence with ideological falsification).

Also for the crime of ideological falsification of a public document (as an indirect perpetrator).

For the crime of improper use of privileged information.

The hearing lasted about five hours. Prosecutor Sandra Fleitas argued that Carrera "acted deceitfully in the acts in which he was supposed to intervene due to his position, causing harm to the administration for the benefit of a third party." 

Imposed precautionary measures

Last June, it was ordered that Carrera had to establish a residence, could not leave the country without judicial authorization, and had to comply with periodic check-ins for 90 days.

The prosecutor requested house arrest with an ankle monitor and a ban on the use of social networks (for "intimidation" via posts), but the judge denied it.

Formalization confirmed

On October 17, a Criminal Appeals Court confirmed the charges of fraud and improper use of privileged information, but revoked the charge of ideological falsification by a public official. 

Prosecutor Fleitas appealed the revocation, but the court upheld the two remaining charges.

Carrera remains charged and under investigation.

Symbol of left-wing corruption

Charles Carrera represents the typical ultra-corrupt left-wing politician, who benefits from the State to the detriment of taxpayers who pay their taxes.

As leftist politicians usually do around the world, they seek a large and powerful State to obtain personal and political benefits at the expense of honest citizens.

Carrera improperly used State resources for personal benefit and for the benefit of a third party.

It should be remembered that last year Charles Carrera was defended by Alejandro Sánchez, current deputy secretary of the presidency of the Republic.
